Meet CANVAS:
CANVAS is an art catalogue born out of a deep appreciation for traditional artistry and the unique struggles faced by smaller artists in today’s digital age. The design takes inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, showcasing its signature emphasis on sleek, geometric shapes and a design approach rooted in practicality.
Research and Inspiration
The design of CANVAS draws from the works of trailblazing designers like Jessica Svendsen, David Carson, Neville Brody, Erik Spiekermann, and Bauhaus pioneer Herbert Bayer. Their approaches to bold typography, unconventional layouts, and clean, functional design deeply influenced the magazine’s balance of creativity and structure.
Content Development
The content development for CANVAS began with brainstorming and sketching in Procreate, where I explored a variety of shapes and layouts inspired by the artists I researched. While their work provided a strong foundation, I embraced creative freedom, experimenting with forms to see what resonated. Ultimately, I blended a traditional Bauhaus aesthetic with hand-drawn elements to add a personal, artistic touch that sets the design apart. Since the magazine celebrates artists, I emphasized this through textured shapes, creating a tactile, visually rich experience that mirrors the creativity of its subject matter.
Design Execution
Bringing CANVAS into InDesign, I focused on refining the layout and experimenting with typography while staying true to the Bauhaus font style. To maintain a cohesive and impactful design, I kept the color scheme minimal, using only black, white, and a bold red as the accent color. This simplicity not only highlights the content but also reinforces the magazine’s Bauhaus-inspired aesthetic.
Contents Spread
The contents spread combines bold visuals and clean organization. The first page features a full-page drawing that sets the creative tone of CANVAS. On the opposite page, a central circle anchors the layout, with text arranged in a semi-circle listing the magazine's sections. This design blends artistic flair with functionality, using geometric shapes to guide the reader seamlessly.
